San Antonio

For good reason, San Antonio has long been regarded as one of America’s top travel destinations, where visitors can experience the amenities of a big city as well as the charm of a small town.  In this city founded by Spanish missionaries, thrilling theme parks and landmarks filled with historical significance can be enjoyed while surrounded by the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.  The city’s exciting blend of cultures offers all the ingredients for a memorable visit to one of America’s most unique cities.

The Tower of the Americas was the theme structure of Hemisfair ’68,” The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas”.  The 750-foot observation tower restaurant, the tallest observation deck in Texas, features stunning panoramic views.  The Alamo, a former Spanish Mission built in 1718, welcomes more than 4 million visitors each year. The site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo is known as the Shrine of Texas Liberty.

El Mercado (Market Square) is the largest Mexican market in the U. S. and a destination for authentic food and Mariachi music. More than 100 stores can be found grouped around a colorful outdoor plaza, filled with items imported from Mexico. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park includes multiple walled compounds where diverse communities lived and worshipped, beginning in 1718.  Catholic priests established the missions during Spanish colonial times and the churches remain active parishes today.  The 1929 Majestic Theater is a National Historic Landmark and home to Broadway in San Antonio and other live entertainment.

Amazing encounters with marine life can be found at SeaWorld, which also offers a wide variety of thrill rides while maintaining an emphasis on conservation and education in its live shows.  The 200-acre Six Flags Fiesta Texas has world-class entertainment in several venues, a water park, and a dozen coasters that provide breathtaking experiences.  The city’s natural beauty is on full display in Brackenridge Park, home of the San Antonio Zoo.

Since 1979, Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels has been on the cutting edge of waterpark development and has earned the title of World’s Best Waterpark for multiple years. 30 miles north of San Antonio, the Natural Bridge Caverns provide LED-illuminated views of incredible rock formations 180 feet beneath the surface. In nearby Bulverde, Tejas Rodeo Company features a Saturday night rodeo, live music and dancing, and a Steakhouse and Saloon where visitors can “eat like a Texan”.
