Overview

Bands will be scheduled at forty minute intervals.  An adjudicated performance will be followed by a clinic.  Open to Middle School, High School and Community College Jazz Bands.

Awards

Participating Jazz Bands will compete for Best in Festival, Best in Class and Outstanding Performance trophies.  Trophies will be presented for all Division Ratings.  Exemplary performers will be awarded individual solo medallions.

Ron Wilkins

New York City based musician Ron Wilkins has been performing for over forty years at the highest levels, touring around the world with his own groups as well as premiere artists. He runs his own New York City big band.  Ron has performed with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, the Count Basie Orchestra, the Jimmy Heath Big Band, Arturo O’Farrill and his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and many others as well as solo artists from a variety of genres.  A former member of the USAF Band of the West at Lackland AFB, he has performed with numerous symphony orchestras, including San Antonio, Austin, Victoria, Temple and the Mid-Texas Symphony.  His experience includes performances with several theatrical productions, including “Wicked”, “West Side Story”, “The Lion King”, “Kinky Boots”, “Book ofMormon”, and  “Motown”.  With an extensive background as an educator, Ron has performed as a guest artist from elementary to university levels, at jazz festivals and has maintained his own private studio for decades.  He has held positions at several colleges including UTSA, University of Incarnate Word, and Texas State, Texas Lutheran and St. Mary’s Universities. He has two CDs as a leader, recorded in 2000 and 2005 and was featured on a live recording in October, 2012.  Ron is a Shires trombone artist and currently maintains his own private teaching studio and works with the New York Jazz Academy.

Dr. Russell Haight

An Assistant Professor of Jazz and Saxophone at Texas State University, Dr. Russell Haight maintains a busy performance schedule in Texas and has played throughout the U. S., Canada, South America, and China.  He has performed with luminaries such as Ralph Bowen, Bill Watrous, Vincent Herring, Bobby Shew, Doug Lawrence, Shelly Berg, Tim Hagans, Eric Johnson, Dan Miller, Andre Hayward, Rufus Reid and the late George Duke.  Skilled at both performance and research, he earned the Eleanor Stribling Award for Excellence in Jazz Performance and the prestigious Butler School of Music Outstanding Dissertation award while earning his Doctorate degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Texas at Austin.  As a researcher and educator, Haight has presented at the International Saxophone Symposium, the Jazz Education Network conference, Texas Music Educators Convention and the ProJazz Institute in Chile.

 

Scott McDonald

Scott McDonald taught high school for 32 years in the San Antonio area before retiring from public school in 2014. Prior to that, he was director of bands at Judson High School for 14 years.  Currently, he is a professor of saxophone, supervisor of music student teachers, and director of the Jazz  Studies at Texas Lutheran University.   Mr. McDonald holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Tech University and a Masters from Texas State University.  He is was the Region 12 Jazz Chairman for 25 years and currently is a member of the Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association.

In addition to festival performance, groups opting for an overnight package stay in a 3+ star hotel with a full American breakfast and a full day admission to Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Once free package at double occupancy rate for every 25 paid participants. American Classic representatives provide exclusive express check-in service and 24-hour on-call hotel service.
